Abstract: BALANO, CRISTINE C. "Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Styles of Selected Academic Student Organizations' Officers in Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite". Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2007.Adviser: Mrs. Amor Alvinez-Santiago. Experts argued that leadership is associated with non-cognitive interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. Moreover, success on leadership depends on the ability to control emotions. This research discusses the fact about the real scenario of academic student organizations' officers. The study was conducted to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and leadership styles of academic student organizations' officers in Cavite State University. Specifically, the study aimed to: present the demographic profile of academic student organizations' officers according to age, gender, organizational position, and year level; determine the emotional intelligence of the respondents in terms of emotional awareness, managing one's emotions, self-motivation, empathy, and coaching other's emotions; determine the leadership styles of the respondents in terms of autocratic leadership style, democratic leadership style, and laissez faire leadership style; and determine if there is significant relationship between emotional intelligence and leadership styles of selected academic student organizations' officers. The computed chi-square was the statistical tool used. A total of one hundred five (105) academic student organizations' officers were chosen as respondents through purposive sampling, where in in each academic student organization there are seven (7) student officer-representatives namely: president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, auditor, PRO and Business Manager. Emotional Intelligence Self Evaluation by Dr. Nicholas Hall was administered among the respondents to determine their emotional intelligence. Likewise, leadership styles of the respondents were determined by administered Leadership Style Self-Assessment of Robert Conyne. Based on the findings, it was found that majority of the respondents were females, 20 years of age and third year college students. The emotional intelligence of the respondent was above average level. Furthermore, emotional awareness domain was the most common practice of the respondents. On the other hand, leadership styles of the respondents were on moderate verbal interpretation. Moreover, they moderately used the three types of leadership styles (autocratic, democratic, laissez faire leadership style). Furthermore, laissez faire was the most common practice of style of leadership of the respondents. Results on emotional intelligence and leadership styles indicated that self-motivation was related on the leadership styles of the respondents. Furthermore, based on computation, no evidence was found to refute the hypothesis of insignificant between emotional intelligence and leadership styles. On account of the foregoing, it's an evidence to accept null hypothesis (Ho).
