BERSABE, GILBERT C., BARNES, JONNEL S., SOSA, CATHERINE D.,The Causes and Effects of Sleep Deprivation Among CvSU Dormitorians, Research Problem, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2007. Advisers: Mrs. Vina Velasco R.N. and Dr. Josefina R. Rint.
The study was conducted from October 2006 to November 2006 in CvSU male-annex dormitory to: determine the number of hours spent each night by the male dormitorians; state clearly the factors that contribute to their sleep deprivation; find out the possible effects of sleep deprivation experienced by the dormitorians, assess the common health problems and compare the immune response of short sleepers to average sleepers in terms of length of sleep. From 47 total populations, 32 respondents were selected through quota sampling. All respondents were given questionnaires regarding the sleeping hours devoted each night and the data were grouped into short and average sleepers groups. The average hour of sleep that male dormitorians spent each night was seven hours. However, the factors that contributed to their sleep deprivation were school exam or project, peer, schedule, environment and excessive worry. The after effects of sleep deprivation were sleepiness/drowsiness, inactiveness, unwellness, grogginess, irritability and fatigue.
The common health problems experienced by the dormitorians due to sleep deprivation were fever, cough and cold. In terms of immune response, there was a significant increase in the number of infections experienced by the short sleepers than those average sleepers. Average sleepers who regularly got seven to nine hours of sleep each night were healthier than short sleepers who got less than seven hours of sleep each night.
