Abstract: MENDOZA, ALENN JAY R. "COMPARISON ON THE CLINICAL USE AND CUTANEOUS TISSUE REACTION TO SNAKE PLANT (Sanseviera hyacyndwides) LEAF-DERIVED SUTURE AND SILK SUTURE". Undergraduate Thesis. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. March 2007. Adviser: Eugene M. Principe, DVM, MS. The study was conducted to compare the clinical use and cutaneous tissue reaction of snake plant leaf-derived suture and silk suture in abdominal incisions in cats. Six animals were used in the study. The snake plant leaf-derived suture was placed on the left while the silk suture was placed on the right abdominal paramedian incisions. Gross tissue reactions such as wound apposition, swelling and hyperemia were observed and graded from day one to 21. Tissue samples were collected in week one, two and three stained with haematoxylin and eosin stain and observed under light microscope. Significant difference in wound hyperemia was observed from day one to day three. Significant differences in number of inflammatory cells and hemorrhage were also observed in histological evaluation. Based on the results obtained, snake plant leaf-derived caused greater tissue reaction than silk suture but allowed apposition of wound edges.
