Abstract: LOPEZ, LINDSEY MARIE S., MARASIGAN, HAZZEL JENNISE G., OCUBILLO, JULIE ANN M. The Cause and Effect of Stress Among Nursing Students of Cavite State University Batch 2008 in Emergency Room of GEAMH and TFGH and Their Coping Mechanism, S.Y. 2007-2008. Special Problem. Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2008. Advisers: Mrs. Vina V. Velasco and Mrs. Louella Burgos. This study was conducted at the College of Nursing, Cavite Sate University from April 2007 to March 2008. This study aimed to determine the cause and effect of stress among nursing students of Cavite sate University batch 2008 in the emergency room of General Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Hospital and Tama Family General Hospital and student's coping mechanisms. Specifically, it aimed to know the cause of stress among nursing students inside the emergency room, identify the most common warning signs of stress experienced by the nursing students, and enumerate the coping mechanisms used by the respondents to overcome stress. Likewise the study was conducted to assess the relationship of cause and effect of stress to coping mechanisms and the relationship of warning signs of stress to coping mechanism. A survey was conducted through the use of questionnaire Probability sampling specifically the simple random sampling was used to identify the respondents. A total of 87 respondents were taken to be the sample size using Slovin's formula. Statistical measures such as mean and standard deviation were used to identify the cause and effect of stress to the nursing students in emergency room of GEAMH and TFGH. A Liked scale was also used in this study and was analyzed using the Pearson formula in determining the correlation of cause of stress to coping mechanisms and warning signs of stress to coping mechanisms. In terms of cause of stress experienced by the students, it was found out that in GEAMH lack of facilities such as limited number of beds, limited number of linens and lack of instruments were the stressors encountered by the respondents. Whereas in TFGH, most of the respondents were unsure and few disagreed to the identified stressors. In terms of emergency room setting in GEA1V1H too many patients was the most common warning sign. Whereas in TFGH the respondents are unsure. In terms of presence of significant others in both hospitals, testing the ability of the students was the most common cause of stress. In terms of relationship of cause of stress to coping mechanisms, it was found out that cause of stress has a high relationship to emotion focused coping mechanism. In addition to the relationship of warning signs of stress has a very high relationship to emotion focused on coping mechanism. As a result, most of the respondents used coping mechanisms specifically Emotion Focused Coping Mechanism to overcome stress. Results also showed that emergency room in GEAMH is more stressful area than in emergency room of TFGH.
