Summary: "Geographic information systems are computer software and hardware system that enable users to capture, store, analyze and manage spatially referenced data. The text geographic information system application presents a comprehensive discussion of fundamental geographic science and the applications of principles using GIS and other software tools. The objective of first chapter is to apply the concept of range inventory in the recognition and evaluation of potential and actual production for optimal utilization of valuable natural resource for domestic livestock production. Second chapter presents the formal definition of geographical data models with non-destructive testing methods. In third chapter, a top-down Gis framework for landscape analysis has been proposed using hydrological watersheds as reference object for segmentation of the landscape. Fourth chapter focuses on the ontology for managing moving 3D spatial objects such as air pollution, and flood. The GIS and prospects of the ex situ plant conservation have been presented in the fifth chapter. In the sixth chapter, we discuss on Gis applied to the hydrogeological characterization. Seventh chapter aims to provide a discussion about the applicability of the mapping, change detection and spatial modeling efforts in the southern Brazil coastal plain. In eight chapter, we propose a novel approach to automatically building informed virtual geographic environments using data provided by geographic information system. The aim of ninth chapter is to integrate all the individual remote sensing methodologies related to water shed monitoring an d management in a holistic approach. Tenth chapter deals with the problem of cadastral maps. In eleventh chapter, the difficulties and limitations in front of an effective integration of GIS into education sector have been focused in twelfth chapter. The use of geographic approach using voronoi diagrams with constraints has been focused in twelfth chapter. The use of geographic information system for health research has been revealed in thirteen chapter. A primer on recent advancement on freight transportation has been introduced in fourteenth chapter. Last chapter reports a web-based situational awareness earthquake information mash up tool."--Back cover
