Abstract: AMBANTA, LENMARI-AIVYL G., CORTEZ, DYAN M., and RAMIREZ ANGELA THERESE S. Assessment on the Utilization of Nursing Informatics among Staff Nurses in the Province of Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2013. Adviser: Nenita B. Panaligan, RN, MAN. Nursing informatics is being utilized nowadays in healthcare settings. The study entitled "Assessment on the Utilization of Nursing Informatics among Staff Nurses in the Province of Cavite" explained the information technology usage of nurses in the hospital setting in Cavite. The study was conducted from June 2012 to March 2013 in selected hospitals in Cavite, namely General Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Hospital (GEAMEI), Cavite Medical Center (CMC), Medical Center Imus (MCI), and Divine Grace Medical Center (DGMC) to assess the level of usage of nursing informatics in selected healthcare institutions in Cavite. A survey questionnaire was used to gather pertinent data among the staff nurses in the selected tertiary hospitals. Fifty registered staff nurses were chosen to be the respondents of the study. Majority of the respondents were computer literate. In the utilization of nursing informatics, thirty percent of the respondents claimed that they were using it in their area while seventy percent admitted that they were not using it. The advantages and disadvantages of using nursing informatics were also assessed. The foremost advantage was increased time for patient care followed by quick access to clinical data. There were identified disadvantages in the utilization of nursing informatics such as: important documents of patient can easily be tampered. If there is a virus that will pass through the system, the files may be corrupted and be lost. The problems encountered by the staff nurses showed that majority of them did not have the system for encoding of data. They preferred the traditional handwriting especially those who were not familiar with the computer features and it is costly to use the electronic system of documentation. Finally, most of the staff nurses were computer literate but they revealed that they did not have an informatics system in their healthcare institution to practice. Seminars, trainings were also needed for better understanding of the said program.
