Summary: "The production of transgenic livestock has the opportunity to significantly improve human health, enhance nutrition, protect the environment, increase animal welfare, and decrease livestock disease. Animal biotechnology has been practiced in one form or another since the beginning of the domestication of animals. Many of the previously used tools of animal breeding, genetics, and nutrition have played and will continue to play an important role in the selection, propagation, and management of desirable and economically important characteristics in livestock. In the future, livestock production will rely even more heavily on existing and emerging biotechnological advances to produce our food. Yet, improvements are still needed in product composition and production efficiency, especially in growth, disease resistance, and reproduction. Genetically modified (transgenic) livestock, stem cells, and other emerging biotechnologies will have important roles in producing more and higher quality food derived from livestock. Genetic engineering is an ever-expanding field in the world of science. In the last ten years, the process of genetically altering organisms has evolved from experimentation to commercial application. It is taking the place of selective breeding for isolating desired traits in different organisms. Transgenics has also led to a better understanding of gene function, allowing for better understanding of human diseases such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and cancer. For some, such as the starving poor and those afflicted with genetically-caused diseases, transgenic organisms are a blessing. For others, such as poor farmers and the animals themselves, genetic engineering spells the end of the world. Current knowledge, methodology, technical improvements and successes in the applications of transgenic technology to a range of animals which are important in agriculture are brought together for the first time under one cover."--Back cover.
