Abstract: This farm practice was conducted at the backyard Piggery project of Mrs. Felisa Crystal of Barrio Kaytambog, Indang, Cavite from September 16, 1985 to December 19, 1985. It aimed to demonstrate the proper utilization of kitchen refuse as supplementary feeds for fattening hogs; to reduce cost of fattening hogs by substituting part of the commercial feeds with kitchen refuse; to evaluate the practicability and profitability of producing marketable hogs fed with non-traditional feeds, and to encourage the farmers to use kitchen refuse to reduce the cost of hog or swine production. The growing pigs were used as stock, with the total initial weight of 65 kgs or an average initial weight of 33.5 kgs. They were housed in a clean and disinfected pen. At the start the stocks were fed with commercially available hog grower mash for three consecutive days and kitchen refuse every fourth day. When the animal reached the weight of 60 kgs per head, they were fed with commercially available hog finisher mash for three successive days and the kitchens refuse every fourth day. After three months of feeding, the animals gained a final weight of 174.29 kgs live weight with a total gain in weight of 107.29 kilograms. The actual operational expenses of the project amounted to P41200.00 giving a net return of P1, 028.80. It was noted that the high net return realized from the project could be attributed to the lower cost of production, enhanced by the kitchen refuse as supplementary feeds for fattening hogs.
