Abstract: AVILA, ADRIANE B., and MOJICA, VINCENT O. Construction and Evaluation of a Rotary Phase Converter. Undergraduate Design Project. Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2015. Adviser: Engr. Ronald P. Pena. The study was conducted from September to December 2014 at Trece Martires City to construct and evaluate a rotary phase converter. Specifically the study aimed to: l . determine the specifications and ratings of electrical components; 2. design and construct the wiring connection of the rotary phase converter with a three-phase line to line voltage of 220V in delta and wye configuration; 3. construct a terminal housing for the whole system; 4. test and evaluate the rotary phase converter; and 5. compute the project cost. Rotary phase converter is a device that converts single phase input power source into a three-phase output power source with the use of an idler motor. The rotary phase converter works on a principle of starting the idler motor with single phase source and then generates a three-phase source for its output. It was composed of switching controls, monitoring devices, indicators, connecting wires, safety protections, capacitors and an idler motor. The output can be selected to have a delta or wye output configuration using the selector switch. The device was intended to be used as an aid for the school laboratory experiments, as an input source to three phase system trainers, and as a supply for three phase equipment which is suited to the rotary phase converter. The study attained all the objectives successfully and the system was constructed in a way that the users could handle safely. The total cost of the system was PI 5, 385.
