This study was conducted to determine the level of disaster preparedness of local
government officials in Indang, Cavite. Specifically, it aimed to describe the demographic
and socio-economic characteristics of the participants and their municipalities; determine the
participants' level of preparedness in terms of hazard knowledge; disaster formal and
informal plans and agreements; life and safety protection initiated, recovery plans and/or
measures; and identify the participant's reasons for preparing for a disaster in their areas.
The study was descriptive research with 288 barangay officials from the municipality of
Indang, Cavite as participants.
More than half of the participants were males (68%) with a mean age of 50 to 59
years. Majority were married and were able to graduate in college (48%) or high school
(23%). Many of the participants were barangay councilors or kagawad with 1 to 1 1 years of
service in the barangay.
The level of preparedness to typhoon was determined based on 5 parameters. These
five parameters, barangay officials were "very prepared" in terms of hazard and knowledge
(mean-3.44), formal and informal plans and agreements (mean=3.47), and Supportive
resources (mean=3.52), life and safety protection (mean=3.52), and initiation recovery
(mean=3.43).
In general, the study revealed that the barangay officials from the municipality of
Indang, Cavite was "very prepared" level of preparedness to typhoon disaster. This indicates
that the barangay officials recognized the tasks to be done before and/or equipment should be
present before, during, and after the disaster, however, these are still in the planning stage.All
the participants considered themselves prepared when typhoon disaster comes. Participants'
expressed reason for preparing were more on for "home-based" disaster preparedness and
that they had attended seminars on disasters.
