Abstract: ABSTRACT TAMPOYA, MARITES CALOZA, "Production and Marketing Analysis of Gladiola in Selected Towns of Upland Cavite," Undergraduate Thesis, Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Major in Agricultural Economics, Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite, April 1996, Adviser: Dr. Nelia Cresino. This study was conducted in selected towns of upland Cavite to determine the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents; identify the production and marketing practices employed by the gladiola growers; determine the level of production; estimate the cost and return generated from production and marketing of gladiola; determine the relationship between income and selected variables; identify the different constraints in the production and marketing of gladiola; and recommend solutions to these constraints. Results of the study showed that the average age of the respondents was 51 years. The level of education of the respondents was generally low. More than one half reached the elementary level while twenty percent does not have formal schooling. The number of dependents ranged from 1-10 with an average of 4 dependents. Respondents had been into gladiola farming for an average of 19 years. An average income of ₱6,163.25 was generated by growers from an 18 sq. m. farm. The production practices employed by the respondents were land preparation, planting, weeding, and fertilization, control of pest and diseases and harvesting. The gladiola growers had two methods of selling the produce; pick-up and delivery method. Most of the respondents dispose their products at the town market, at home/farm gate and nearby towns like Imus and Baclaran. The volume of sales depends on the production. It was reported that all the produce brought into the market were all sold. Likewise, the majority of the respondents disposed the products to wholesalers followed by retailers and then to ultimate consumers which constitute only eighteen percent. Before the product was received by the ultimate consumer it first passes through the different channels like agent, middlemen, wholesaler and retailer. The average total production cost incurred by the respondents was ₱2,466. For the marketing of the produce, it was found out that the computed cost was ₱5,317. The computed average income from sales of gladiola was ₱13,966.25, with the total production and marketing cost of ₱7,783. The respondents earned a net income of ₱6,183.25. Numerous problems were identified by the respondents such as limited access to new technologies, lack of technical know-how on proper management and skills, high cost of planting materials, timing in blooming of flowers, poor road conditions, inadequate transportation facilities, perishability of the product and lack of marketing information base. Having identified the problems therefore, it is fitting to face the challenge of propelling the industry toward growth and development. That would mean developing policies that would address the major constraints or problems. Seminars are also highly recommended, because the respondents need to be informed about the new technology in production and marketing of gladiola. Correspondingly, these would mean capitalizing on strengths and opportunities to bring out the best in the industry.
