Abstract: RAMOS ROSALYN PANALIGAN. Income and Consumption Expenditures of Street Food Vendors in Selected Towns of Cavite. BS Thesis, Bachelor of Science in Economics major in Business Economics, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 2002. Adviser. Mrs. Soledad M. Using. A study was conducted to determine the socio-economic characteristics of street food vendors in selected towns of Cavite and their present level of income; analyze the extent of contribution to their family income; determine their consumption expenditures according to their income level; ascertain the relationship between income and some socio-economic characteristics; and determine the problems encountered in the allocation of income in various expenditure items. The study was conducted in selected towns of Cavite, namely: Indang, Trece Martires City, Bacoor, Dasmarinas, Imus, and Silang. A total of 120 respondents was obtained by means of quota sampling. Data were collected through the use of interview schedule and questionnaire which were distributed to the street food vendors. The data were analyzed using statistical tools such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, range, and rank. Chi-square test was used to show the relationship between income, consumption expenditure and some socio-economic characteristics. Majority of the street food vendors were female (55%). The mean age was 37 and most of them only finished high school (48%). The respondents' mean income was only ₱5,519 per month and majority of the respondents received a monthly income of ₱7,413. Most of the respondents belonged to average income group receiving a monthly net income of ₱4,333 to ₱6,665, while 56 percent of the respondents contributed 91 to 100 percent to their family income. The respondents mostly spent their income on food (41%), education (14%) and clothing (14%). They also spent on household items (13%), fuel, light and electricity (12%) and personal needs/cosmetics and medical care with three percent each. Among the average and per capita expenditures, food had the highest with ₱2,700 and ₱540. Income was not significantly related to the selected socio-economic variables such as age, gender, civil status, educational attainment and years of selling experience. The respondents found difficulty in allocating their income to various expenditure items because of low income. In general, the street food vendors are earning low income though their families are heavily dependent on their income. Major consumption expenditure items are food, education and clothing. The rest are household items, fuel, light, electricity, recreation/personal needs/cosmetics, and medical care. The municipal government should formulate plans and programs that will uplift socio-economic condition of street food vendors. They should also provide them with financial assistance by coordinating with the lending institutions that will lend them sufficient capital at low interest rate.
