The study was conducted during the Academic Year 2017-2018 at Cavite State University, Indang Cavite from October to December 2017. It aimed to determine the following: the socio-demographic characteristics of the participants in terms of age, sex, course, sports, religion and monthly income; the emotional intelligence of the varsity athletes in CVSU-Main Campus, Indang Cavite in terms of self-awareness, self-regulation, self-motivation, social-skills, and empathy; if there is a significant relationship between the socio — demographic profile of the participants and their emotional intelligence. Complete enumeration of 85 varsity athletes enrolled for academic year 2017 — 2018 in Cavite State University — Main Campus was employed in this study.
This study utilized descriptive research design. Intended to investigate the relationship between the socio - demographic profile of the participants and their emotional intelligence. Instrument used were the 50 item questionnaire that was adopted from Emotional Intelligence Self-Assessment Test from the website linac.co.uk. The statistical analysis of the study are percentage method for the socio — demographic profile and weighted mean for the emotional intelligence. In addition, the study utilized the chi — square to determine the relationship between variables.
Findings of the study revealed that most of the varsity athletes of CVSU — Main belong to the age group of 18 -21 years old making them at the bracket of natured individuals already. Male and female athletes are almost par in terms of numbers. Most of them are engaged in ball games, e, g, volleyball, which are mostly team sports that is made up of group of players. Most of them also take up courses in the field of BPE/BSRM, Roman Catholic denomination appeared also to be the major religious affiliation of these athletes. And finally, they mostly belong to middle — class families as based from their monthly income.
These athletes manifest a very high level of emotional intelligence as given by their reaction/perception towards the areas indicating: Self — awareness, Self — regulation, Self- motivation, Social Skills, and Empathy towards others.
There is an association/relationship between the socio — demographic profile and the emotional intelligence of these athletes. This profile includes: Age, Sex, Course, Sports, Religion, and Monthly income.
The study reveals that the emotional intelligence of the athletes is dependent on their socio - demographic Profile.
The varsity athletes of CVSU — Main are diversified in terms of their socio - demographic profile. This means that they come from different age, sex, course, sports, religion, and monthly income.
The varsity athletes of CVSU — Main possess a very high level of emotional intelligence as seen in the following aspects: Self — awareness, Self — regulation, Self — motivation, Social Skills, and Empathy. The emotional intelligence of these athletes depended on their age, sex, course, sports, religion, and monthly income. This means that there is a relationship between their socio- demographic profile and the level of their emotional intelligence.
