The present condition and number of species within the Naic river ecosystem were documented and the effect of pollution and species diversity were assessed; sainples were collected, identified and preserved.
The survey and assessment was conducted at the river system of Naic, Cavite. The study sites were divided into western and eastern rivers. The western side was composed of Bulbok River, Tulay bubong, Salipit> Layon, Paso de lala, Convento and Balsahan. While the eastem side was composed of Ilat 1, Ilat 2, Ilat 3, Balon River, Kayalamang, Sabang dam, Ibayo River, Balsahan River and estuary. A total of 38 species from 29 families were collected and identified. The faunal group included mollusk
(44.21 0/0), arthropods (28.29) and vertebrates (26.996)
The mollusk fauna included snails, oysters and mussels. The identified arthropods fauna were spide13, insects and crustaceans. The chordata were composed Of fishes and frogs.
A pH value of four had the most number of species (32.5%) but a pH value of six had the most number of individuals (41.9%). type of river beds also influenced faunal diversity.
A total of 23 species were observed in the river with substrates of fine sand: it was considered the most numerous species and the number of individuals within the area, Tue velocity of wafer current affected the faunal distribution of the species. A water velocity 0f 41-50 cm/ second favored 27 out of 38 species.
The respondents named the stoneflies, golden snail, water eel, tilapia and catfishes as most tilapia. Four other species were also considered abundant, they were dragonflies, damselflies, caddiesflies, and shrimps.
Fourteen of the identified species were abundant throughout the year, and another 14 species were present during dry season; 13 species were only present during rainy season, and 14 were occasionally seen in the. river.
The five benefits derived from river were: as source of water to inigate their fields; as source of viand for meals; for cleaning and washing clothes, and for recreation.
Pollution and competition among species were the most common reason for the decline of aquatic fauna. The major pollutants included the livestock wastes, human excreta , non-biodegrable materials, and oil spills.
