ROZUL, ROSENA O., Instructional Leadership Practices of the Public Elementary School Principals in the Division of Cavite School Year 2004- 2005.Doctoral Dissertation. Doctor of Philosophy in Education. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2005. Adviser: Dr. Constancia G. Cueno.
The study sought to determine the instructional leadership practices of elementary school principals from the Division of Cavite and the different predictors of their instructional leadership practices, as well as the teachers’ and pupils’ performance. The respondents of the study were selected principals, teachers and pupils from the division.
Specifically the study sought to (a) determine the personal and professional characteristics of principals in terms of age, gender, civil status, educational attainment, teaching experience, administrative experience and seminars attended (b) describe the instructional leadership of the principals as evaluated by themselves and by the teachers in terms of supervision and evaluation, staff development, instructional management and support, resource management and quality control, (c) determine the significant difference and relationship between personal and professional characteristics of principals with their instructional leadership practices (e) determine the predictors of principals instructional leadership practices, performance of teachers and pupils.
The respondents of the study consisted of 80 principals, 198 teachers and their pupils. The instruments used to determine the instructional leadership was a questionnaire constructed by the researcher purposely for the study.
The results of the study showed that the majority of the principals were old. Female administrators outnumbered the male administrators and most of them were married.
With regard to professional qualification, all of the administrators have pursued graduate studies. Many of them had “much experience” in teaching, but few of them had “more experience” in administration work. In general, the number of seminars that they had attended were few.
The instructional leadership practices of the principals were “outstanding”, as rated by themselves, while the teachers rated them as “very good”. There was a significant difference between the principals’ and teachers’ evaluation of the instructional leadership practices. The principals rated themselves higher compared to the ratings given to them by the teachers.
