Abstract: RODRIN, ADORA RAVELO Training Needs Assessment of the Coffee Farmers in Selected Towns of Cavite. B. S. Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Development Management major in Training Program Management. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2002. Adviser: Dr. Anastacia M. Bayas. This study was conducted to assess the training needs of coffee farmers in selected towns of Cavite for the year 2001 — 2002. Specifically, it aimed to describe the socio—economic characteristics of coffee farmers such as age, sex, educational attainment, civil status, size of the family, number of years in farming, size of the farm and tenure status; identify the training needs of coffee farmers in selected towns of Cavite; determine the training preferences of coffee farmers in terms of manner, methods, sponsoring organization, place and duration; and know the common problems encountered by the coffee farmers. Data were gathered through actual interviews. Secondary data were also used in the study. Data were obtained from the Department of Agriculture Provincial Office, Trece Martires City, Cavite and from the office of the Municipal Agriculture of selected municipalities of Cavite. Proportionate sampling was used in getting the samples and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Based on the training needs of the coffee farmers they needed a one — day training for the subject matter Pest and Diseases of Coffee, here in Cavite using lecture presentation methods. Based on the analysis, majority of the coffee farmers were male, married, old, with an average of 6 members of the family. Most had formal schooling, were owner — operators and had long farming experience. Almost half of the total samples needed additional knowledge/skills in the given subject matter or particular topics such as Pest and Diseases of Coffee, Marketing Practices in Coffee Production, Cultural Management Practices in Coffee Production, Utilization of Coffee by Product, Storing Management of Coffee, Fertilization in Coffee Production, Pre and Post Harvest Management in Coffee Production and Rejuvenation of Coffee. More than 85 percent of the coffee farmers encountered problems in their coffee farms. The problems they encountered were decline in the price of coffee and high price of inputs like labor and fertilizer. They also mentioned the occurrence of pest and diseases in their coffee plants, occurrence of typhoon, lack of capital to finance their farm and some coffee plants were not productive.
