Abstract: Umipon, Ricardo Colorado, "The Socio-Economic Status of OLT Beneficiaries in Pampanga-A Case Study." Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite, April 1980. This study was conducted in Apalit, Pampanga, among the OLT beneficiaries for the purpose of (1) determining the socio-economic characteristics of OLT beneficiaries; (2) finding out some information as regard their farm production and income; (3) comparing the past and present status of the respondents; (4) determining some problems encountered by the beneficiaries of OLT. Fifty beneficiaries were included in the sample and were selected by simple random sampling. Forty-nine was the mean age of the respondents. On the average, they were able to reach primary level of schooling. The mean number of dependents was 6. Most of the respondents were members of Samahang Nayon. All of the respondents had their own houses. Fifty-eight percent had single storey houses and forty-two had two storey ones. Slightly more than one-half of these houses were made of wood, concrete and G.I. sheets. The mean for years of experience in farming was 26. All of the respondents used improved varieties of rice. Eighty-eight percent of the respondents irrigated their farms while the rest used the rainfed system. Majority had their farms near the road. Sixty-four percent of the beneficiaries considered rice production as their primary source of income. Radio was found as the frequently mentioned proper- ty among the respondents' households. The most common reading materials found were newspapers. The largest proportion of farm operation expenses went to working tools. The mean expenses of these items was 470.48. The mean cost of land preparation was P 221.00. The mean of P 103.80 was spent for weeding and the mean of P 174.00 was spent for harvesting. The mean number of cavans harvested was 155 cavans per annum and the mean income earned by the respondents was P 9,300 per annum. The number of cavans harvested before ranged from 80 to 180 cavans per hectare per annum, having 100 as the mean. The mean reported income was 6,000 per annum. Based on this survey, the beneficiaries of OLT had improved in their rice production and income. As regards rice production they had a mean of 100 cavans of rice per hectare before they enjoyed OLT program, but after they had enjoyed this scheme the mean production of rice was 155 cavans per hectare. Their income before enjoying this program had only a mean of P 6,000 per annum, but after they have enjoyed this program, the respondents had a mean income of P 9,300 per annum. The author therefore concludes in this regard that there was a tremendous impact upon the beneficiaries. The most frequently mentioned problems were lack of capital, insufficiency of water supply during the middle of dry season, prevalence of pests and diseases particularly tungro disease, occurrence of heavy typhoons and storms that led to great damage and loss, lack of knowledge in controlling pests and diseases and lack of enough help from farm management technicians.
