Abstract: Papa, Josephine Merlan, "Economic Analysis of Irrigated Farms in Selected Lowland Towns of Cavite," B.S. Thesis, Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite, March 1985, Adviser: Engr. Amador C. Argete. This study was conducted to determine: 1) the socio-economic characteristics of irrigated rice farmers; 2) the cost and return of producing irrigated rice; 3) the marketing practices adopted by rice farmers; 4) the relationship between management practices and yield as well as marketing practices and income; 5) the problems encountered by farmers in the product- ion and marketing of rice; as well as 6) to gather some suggestions on how to improve rice production and marketing practices. Two lowland towns in Cavite; namely, Naic and Tanza, were selected as research areas from which a random sampling consisting of 100 farmers was taken. The analysis in the study was based primarily on the data obtained covering the period 1984. The chi-square test and other statistical tools were included in this study. The average age of the farmers was fifty In general, the farmers were able to years old reach primary level of schooling. The average number of dependents was five. Majority of the farmers were lessees. The average number of years devoted to rice farming was twenty-eight years with an average farm size of 2.3 hectares. Most of them relied much on rice farming as their main source of income. The mean annual gross income from rice was $19,690.80. The cost of production per hectare of rice farm averaged P5,723.85 with an average yield of seventy-seven cavans per hectare. They sold their palay at P137.27 per cavan. The farmers had a total sale from rice of 10,569.79 obtaining a net farm income of 4,845.94 per hectare in one harvesting season. Farmers had three major sources of market information such as wholesalers, retailers, and rice millers. While wholesale and retail were the methods of selling, their market outlets were also the whole- sellers, retailers, and rice millers. The level of management practices and yield was categorized as either low, average, and high and it was found out that there was no relationship existing between the level of management and yield and also in marketing practices and income.
