Abstract: MIRA, MA. ELIZABETH CAPAWA, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, March 2001. Attitude and Performance of Grade V Teachers and Pupils Towards English Subject in the District of Silang I, Silang, Cavite, SY 1999-2000. Major Adviser: Dr. Constancia G. Cueno. This study was conducted to determine the attitude and performance of Grade V teachers and pupils towards English as a subject in the District of Silang I, Division of Cavite, for School Year 1999-2000. Specifically, it aimed to determine the: 1) profile of teachers teaching English in terms of age, gender, educational attainment, experience in teaching and position, 2) performance of teachers; 3) attitude of teachers towards teaching English; 4) academic performance of Grade V pupils in English; 5) attitude of pupils towards English as a subject; 6) relationship between teachers’ profile and the following: a) attitude of teachers towards English, b) teaching performance; c) pupils’ attitude towards the English subject; and d) pupils’ academic performance in English; 7) relationship between teachers’ attitudes towards teaching English and their teaching performance; 8) relationship between teachers’ attitudes towards teaching English and pupils’ attitude towards English; 9) relationship between pupils’ attitude towards English and their academic performance, and 10) relationship of teaching performance to pupils’ academic performance. The study used the descriptive-correlational method, making use of questionnaires as its principal instrument to gather the desired data. Likewise, the Performance Rating Sheet for Teachers was used. The respondents involved 30 Grade V teachers and 555 Grade V pupils in English. The statistical tests employed were frequency count, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson-Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, and Biserial Correlation Coefficient. After analyzing and interpreting the data, the following were revealed: Few of the teachers belonged to the middle-age group. Majority were BS degree holders with MA units, were most experienced in teaching English, were Teacher 2 and had an income of P10,033.00. They had very satisfactory teaching performance and were generally found to have favorable attitude towards teaching English. On the other hand, the pupil respondents generally had satisfactory performance. They had favorable attitude towards English. Age, gender, educational attainment and teachers’ experience in teaching English were found not significantly related to their attitudes towards teaching English. However, teacher-respondents’ income and position were found significantly related to their attitude towards teaching English. Gender and educational attainment of teacher respondents were not significantly related to their teaching performance while age, position, income and experience in teaching were highly and significantly related to their teaching performance. Age, educational attainment, experience in teaching, position and income were highly and significantly related to pupils’ attitude towards English. Moreover, age, educational attainment, experience in teaching, position and income were highly and significantly related to teachers’ attitude towards English. The relationship between teachers’ teaching performance and pupils’ academic performance was highly significant.
