A survey on the management practices of commercial swine raisers was conducted in nine upland municipalities of Cavite. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the demographic characteristics of swine raisers in upland part of Cavite, the housing, feeding, breeding and health management system, and the production and marketing strategy of swine raisers. This study was conducted from October to December 2002.
Most of the respondents raised swine as additional source of income and just like any other domesticated animals they feed them twice a day with commercial feeds. Majority of the respondents used monitor type of housing made of local materials such as galvanized iron sheet for roofing, hollow blocks and cement for walls and flooring.
They practice hand feeding or twice a day feeding with commercial feeds that they bought directly from the feed mill.
Mating of their animals using natural method is done five times for two years.
The gestation period lasted for 114 days.
Number of piglets produced depends on the ability of the sow, but usually in one farrowing they produce 11-15 heads of piglets with an average weight of 0.5 to 1.0 kg. Weaning of piglets is about 30-45 days or one and a half months. Swine are disposed as piglets, weaners, fatteners, culled sows, and boars in live weight basis.
