An entrepreneurial project on cattle fattening was conducted in Matagbak, Alfonso, Cavite from October 19, 1998 to March 20, 1999. The project was primarily involved on the management, production and marketing aspects.
The project aimed to enhance the students‘ managerial and entrepreneurial skills; give the students a chance to apply their theoretical knowledge in business management to real life working situations; determine the profitability of the project; and identify problems and formulate feasible solutions to such problems.
Six cattles were used in the project. Data were gathered through actual observation and participation of the student-entrepreneurs in all activities of the project.
After five months of operation, the project yielded a positive outcome. The investment project was able to gain a net income of P 21, 411.00 or 30.12 percent return on investment. The project was able to prove its profitability.
Several problems were encountered by the proponents: low gain in weight; slow growth of one of the cattle; and occurrence of internal parasites. To control internal parasites, application of Latigo 500® was done every two months, within the five-month operation.
Another problem was on the confinement of cattle. They cannot be placed close together in one confinement area because of their tendency to fight, which may result in injury or even mortality.
The high capital requirement of this kind of business was another problem. This was solved through the financial assistance of the parents of the proponents.
The absence of weighing scale, which seemingly would have posed a problem in the determination of cattle liveweight, was solved through the use of “heartgirth estimation method” in determining weights.
