Abstract: EROLES, SHERALYN E., GLOBIO, NELDA P. Design and Development of a Microcontroller - Based Coin Sorter and Counter. Undergraduate Design Project. Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2006. Adviser: Mrs. Aileen V. Rocillo. A study was conducted to design and develop a microcontroller based coin sorter and counter machine. The machine was designed to automate the sorting and counting of coins. The Microcontroller — Based Coin Sorter and Counter was composed of the control unit and the sorter unit. The PIC16F877 microcontroller IC was used to perform the task needed in the operation and served as the main component that control the operation of the whole system. Opto coupler sensors were used to detect the coins and transforms electrical signal to optical signal. The LCD was used to display the number of coins sorted, amount and total. The software was developed using Assembly language. The software instructs the control unit for the machine's operation such as sorting, counting and LCD display. Since the coins were sorted according to size some problems were encountered like if a foreign object like a lithium battery which has the same size as of a 250 was place among the coins it will be sorted as 250 coin. The same problem was also encountered when P10.00 coins were included, it was counted and sorted also as P5.00 coin. The total cost included the cost of materials used and cost of fabrication and development of the software was PhP 6,227.38. Materials used were commercially available in the market.
