Fisheries Development and Technology -- Preparation of Fish -- Fish Capture Technology -- Technology in Fish Handling -- Fishing Methods Techniques -- Technical Aspects of Fish Culture -- Fish: Rearing of Carps -- Integrated Fish Farming Technology -- Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology.
Summary: "Fisheries development is the process of achieving the full potential of the fishery sector and includes both eco-biological as well as technological and socio-economic dimensions such as ethical considerations. A fishery may be regarded as being developed if the biomass of the target stock is being fished down to its optimal size (corresponding to its maximum biological productivity) or if efforts are being made to restore it to its optimal level. In the latter case, though, the terms "fisheries rehabilitation" or "stock rebuilding" are preferably used. However, fisheries development may not necessarily involve any prospect of an increase in the size of the harvest. The focus of development trends and activities may be directed towards improving the well-being of the people engaged in the fisheries sector which, in addition to fishers, includes processors, traders, and others directly working in, and dependent on the sector. Fish capture technology encompasses the process of catching any aquatic animal, using any kind of fishing methods, normally operated from a vessel. Use of fishing methods varies, depending on the types of fisheries, and can range from a simple and small hook attached to a line to large and sophisticated midwater trawls or purse seines operated by large fishing vessels. The targets of capture fisheries can include aquatic organisms from small invertebrates to large tunas and whales, which might be found anywhere from the ocean surface to 2 000 meters deep. The large diversity of targets in capture fisheries and their wide distribution requires a variety of fishing gear and methods for efficient harvest. These technologies have developed around the world according to local traditions and not least technological advances in various disciplines. In developing countries, traditional fishermen are important food contributors, yet technological information and development assistance to third-world nations often focuses on agriculture and industrial fishing, without addressing the needs of independent, small-scale fishermen."--Back cover
