Abstract: BENCITO, JAN JERUEL DIMAPILIS. Containerized Organic Lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. Green Wave) Production Enterprise. Bachelor of AgriculturalEntrepreneurship Major in Crop Production, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2014. Adviser: Analita dM. Magsino, PhD. The project was established at the Department of Crop Science Greenhouse #5, Cavite State University Main Campus, Indang, Cavite. With a capital amounting to P 7, 779.75, the project was implemented from November 2013 to January 2014. It aimed to provide opportunity to the student to gain more knowledge and enhance his skills in organic lettuce production; harness the entrepreneurial skills of the student in operating and managing an organic lettuce production enterprise; determine the profitability of production of organically grown lettuce; and identify the problems encountered in lettuce production enterprise. The project involved production of 2,000 organically grown lettuce (var. Green Wave) in polyethylene bags maintained in a protected area measuring 200 m°. Carbonizing the rice hull, seed box preparation, preparation of seed sowing area, preparation of the net house, potting mix preparation, bagging and purchase of seeds and other materials were performed during pre-production activities. Sowing of seeds, transplanting, watering, application of wood vinegar and weeding were the main production activities done in organically grown leaf lettuce. Harvesting of lettuce was done 37— 39 days after transplanting. Packaging was done on-site. The harvest was picked-up by a fruit and vegetable dealer who delivered the produce at Sonya’s Garden in Buck State, Alfonso Cavite. Each kilo was sold at Php100.00 per kilo. Other parts of harvest composed of smaller plants were sold to neighbours at Php75.00 per kilo. During the three months of the operation, the student-entrepreneur encountered simple problems that were easily solved through immediate management strategies. The total cost of production for the three-month period amounted to P 7,779.75. The project gave a net income of P 4, 170.25 and a return on investment of 53%. The student-entrepreneur realized that in a crop production business involving short-season plants which are easy to grow, still the enterprise must not be neglected. Daily monitoring of the enterprise, particularly, during the early stage of crop growth should be done. For him, it was a worthwhile experience to gain high return on the money invested. The project turned into a successful enterprise which the student entrepreneur plans to continue and expand after graduation.
