A study entitled Antimicrobial Activity and Immuno-Potential of Apatot (Morinda citrifolia) was conducted at the Microbiology Research Laboratory, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. The general objective of the study was to determine the antimicrobial activity and immunology potential of Morinda citrifolia. Specifically, the study was undertaken to determine the range of microorganisms inhibited by Morinda citrifolia.
Four samples from different parts of Morinda citrifolia were extracted and subjected to antimicrobial assay by agar well method. Test organisms used for the assay were bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis); mold (Aspergillus niger), and yeast (Candida krusei). Extracts of Morinda citrifolia were inhibitory to gram-positive bacteria but not to gram-negative ones. Molds and yeast were not inhibitory as well. Mice were fed with leaves and fruit extracts for three weeks. Titer production was determined by the agglutination test. Low antibody titers were observed.
