GUARIN, ERLYN MONTEVIRGEN. April 2009. Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profile of Bacteria Isolated from Hotdogs and Drinking Water. Undergraduate Thesis, Bachelor of Science in Biology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. Adviser: Dr. Yolanda A. Ilagan.
A study was conducted to determine the susceptibility profile of microorganisms isolated from hotdogs and drinking water.
A total of 185 bacterial isolates were isolated in the study composed of 72 Staphylococcus aureus; 11 Shigella spp.; 15 Serratia spp.; 21 Salmonella spp.; 14 Proteus spp.; 17 Pseudomonas spp.; 7 Bacillus cereus and 28 Escherichia coli. They were tested using 16 antibiotics, namely: amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (10pg), ampicillin (10g), chloramphenicol (30g), ciprofloxacin (2g), clindamycin (21g), co-trimoxazole (251g), erythromycin (15yg), gentamicin (10ug), lincomycin (2g), nitrofurantoin (15yg) norfloxacin (2g), oxacillin ( Img), penicillin (10 units), rifampicin (2g), streptomycin (10g) and tetracycline (30j1).
A high percentage of bacterial isolates were susceptible to gentamicin (84.9%), followed by ciprofloxacin (82.2%), chloramphenicol (74.6%) and tetracycline (70.8%). The antibiotics nitrofurantoin and penicillin had little effect on the isolates.
Both bacterial isolates from hotdogs and drinking water were resistant to B- lactams, clindamycin and rifampicin. Most resistant isolates were obtained from hotdogs with exception to E. coli.
