Abstract: GANCAYCO, MARY GRACE O. Ornamental Production at Ming's Garden Pasong Langka, Silang, Cavite Farm Practice Report. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Crop Protection. Cavite State University, Indang Cavite. April 2007. Adviser. Prof. Regina Nosa. The farm practice was conducted at Ming's Garden in Pasong Langka, Silang Cavite owned by former First Lady Amelita Ramos. The project aimed to help the student gain experience and practical skills in handling ornamental plants and acquire additional knowledge in ornamental production through actual exposure. During the farm practice, the student was oriented and given a chance to experience and develop practical skills in handling ornamental plants. Hands-on training activities performed were: media preparation, planting and preparing cuttings for planting, pinching and disbudding in mums, watering and applying fertilizer to potted / bagged plants. In media preparation, the proper mixture of coconut coir dust, black cinder and compost at the rate of 1 : 1 : 1 was strictly observed. Planting / replanting is the main activity in the farm since the enterprise is producing several types of ornamental plants. Such activity includes preparing cuttings of poinsettia and euphorbia for planting, planting suckers of bromeliads, budding and disbudding of mums. Wildflowers are propagated by seeds. Urea (45-0-0) and complete fertilizers (14-14-14) are applied in pots every 2 weeks at the rate of 2-3 g/ plant. Fertilizer is applied late in the afternoon to avoid much volatilization. Malathion is sprayed every 2 weeks at the rate of 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water to prevent spread of pests and diseases. The enterprise is selling potted [bagged flowering plants to ornamental retailers, although several non-business-oriented clients usually visit the place for sightseeing, and eventually, most of them are convinced to buy Ming's Garden's plants. The experiences in the production of the ornamentals at Ming's Garden provided the student with hands-on expertise in ornamental nurseries, thus preparing her for future employment in the same venture.
