Abstract: DOHILIO, ERIS S. Coping Strategies of Selected Filipino Workers in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in International Studies. Cavite State University. April 2015. Thesis Adviser: Ms. Adora Joy T. Plete. The study was conducted to: (1) determine the demographic profile of the participants in terms of age, sex, educational attainment, length of stay, and type of work; (2) identify the common problems encountered in the cultural adaptation of Filipino workers in terms of (a) environment, (b) language, (c) changing family dynamics, and (d) cultural mastery; (3) determine the commonly used coping strategies of Filipino workers in Dubai, United Arab Emirates with regards to their cultural adaptation in terms of (a) social support, (b) accommodative, (c) planful problem solving, (d) positive reappraisal, (e) accepting responsibility, and (f) tension reduction; (4) determine if there is a significant relationship between demographic profiles and problems encountered in cultural adaptation; and, (5) determine if there is a significant relationship between demographic profiles and coping strategies of the participants. This is a descriptive-correlation study wherein the demographic profiles, problems encountered, and coping strategies of Filipino workers in Dubai, United Arab Emirates were determined and results were analyzed to see the relationship between demographic profiles and problems encountered and coping strategies. Primary data were gathered through online questionnaire that were disseminated throughout Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Majority of the respondents had ages ranging from 20 to 29 years, male, college graduate, with 13 to 36 months of stay, and were working in commercial and industrial fields. The most common problems in cultural adaptation were humid/warm climate, communicating in Arabic, homesickness, and expensive food/medicine. The most commonly used coping strategies in cultural adaptation were constantly communicating with family through post mails, emails, phone calls, etc., accepting and conditioning oneself to the various events happening around, waking up and leaving early, being positive and optimistic, complying to the rules and policies and attending work regularly and other company activities, and surfing the net. Age, length of stay, and types of work have significant relationship with the problems encountered in cultural adaptation. Meanwhile sex and educational attainment have no significant relationship with problems encountered in cultural adaptation. On the other hand, age, educational attainment, and length of stay have significant relationship with the coping strategies, while sex and type of work have nothing to do with the coping strategies used by the participants.
