ANUAT, JUSTIN MAR M., AURE, WOLTER MIGUEL AND CROOX, JOHN BERNARD M. Antimicrobial Activity and Phytochemical Properties of Tawa-tawa (Euphorbia hirta) Against Common Bacterial and Fungal Pathogens. The study was conducted to determine the antimicrobial activity and phytochemical properties of tawa-tawa (Euphorbia hirta) against common bacterial and fungal pathogens. Specifically, it aimed to: (1) determine the best plant part of Euphorbia hirta that can inhibit the growth of common bacterial and fungal pathogens; (2) determine the best extraction method that exhibit inhibitory activities against bacterial and fungal pathogens; (3) determine the phytochemical constituents of the different extract of Euphorbia hirta; and (4) determine the relationship that exists between inhibitory activities of plant extracts and its phytochemical constituents. All decoctions from leaves, stems and roots exhibited inhibitory activities against Micrococcus luteus while decoction from tawa-tawa leaves showed antibacterial activity against Proteus vulgaris. On the other hand, no extracts inhibited the growth of the fungal pathogens. Results revealed that leaves extracts had the best inhibitory activities among the plant parts used. The results of the study also revealed that among two extraction methods used, decoctions shows better inhibitory activities. Presence of alkaloid, saponin, tannin, steroid, flavonoid, anthraquinone, cardiac glycosides and reducing sugar were detected. Saponins were present in all the extracts. All plant extracts except juice extract of stem had the presence of tannin. Flavonoid was detected in decoctions of extracts except the leaves and reducing sugar is only present in the decoctions of leaves and stem and the juice extract of stem. The active component that exhibit antibacterial activity was found to be saponins while tannins was not responsible for the antimicrobial activity of the plant extracts.
