GERPACIO, LYKA C., ROBERTO ROSELLE C., VIDALLON, RAISA M. Demographic Profile, Career Choice and Goal Orientation of Grade 8 Students from General Mariano Alvarez Technical High School. Undergraduate thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2015. Adviser: Ms. Ana Ruth M. Andalajao.
Specifically, the study sought to determine: 1) the demographic profile of Grade 8 students in terms of age, gender, monthly family income and status of employment of
parents; 2) the career choice of Grade 8 students according to academic, sports and arts
and technical-vocational-livelihood; 3) the goal orientation of Grade 8 students in terms of learning goal orientation and performance goal orientation; 4) the significant
relationship between the demographic profile and career choice of Grade 8 students; 5) the significant relationship between the demographic profile and goal orientation of Grade 8 students; and 6) determine the significant relationship between the career choice and goal orientation of Grade 8 students.
The study made use of a descriptive-correlational method of research. Instruments used in data gathering were the modified Goal Orientation Measure patterned from Button, Mathieu and Zajac (1996) and career choice questionnaire from Department of Education (DepEd) based on the tracks offered by the K-12 Program.
Participants were determined which consisted of 330 students. The statistical measures employed were percentage and frequency, standard deviation and mean, Chi- square Test of Independence and Spearman Rank Order Correlation.
The Grade 8 students are mostly 14-15 years of age with female students having a bigger population than males. The Grade 8 students mostly have below 5,000 monthly family income and employed parents.
The study revealed that the Grade 8 students have mostly chosen academic courses followed by technical-vocational-livelihood and sports and arts courses. It was also revealed that they have very high learning goal orientation as well as the performance goal orientation. Although both learning and performance goal orientation got very high levels, the study shows that learning goal orientation is more consistent through the result of the standard deviation where learning goal orientation has lower results than the performance goal orientation.
The study further determined that all of the hypotheses were accepted where it is found that there is no significant relationship between demographic profile and career choice and goal orientation as well as career choice and goal orientation. However, gender and the career choice of the students was significantly correlated.
