The study was conducted to analyze the contents of selected news headlines of Filipino Star Ngayon from May to August 2005. Specifically, it sought to answer the kinds of news headlines used in the Filipino Star Ngayon from May to August 2005, rules in writing headlines are violated by the writers in the presentation of each news headline published in the Filipino Star Ngayon from May to August 2005, the sensationalized news headlines of Filipino Star Ngayon and made those news headlines sensationalized The descriptive method was used in this study. In order to obtain accurate information, the researchers used Filipino Star Ngayon issues for the month of May to August 2005 for analysis. The researchers collected back issues of the newspaper and chose selected news headlines of Filipino Star Ngayon. They analyzed the kinds of headline and rules violated by the writers and identified sensationalism based on its characteristics. Content analysis was used to produce an objective and systematic description of the subject on study. Based on the results Filipino Star Ngayon used different kinds of headline such as crossline, pyramid, inverted pyramid, flusline, binder, boxed head and teaser from May to August 2005 while the boxed head was preferred. Rules in writing headliners such as "Don't editorialize, state the facts; avoid opinion", "use short familiar word", splitting a verb phrase, names that belong together preposition and its object" and use single quotation marks were commonly violated by the Filipino Star Ngayon from May to August 2005. Out of 728 news headlines in Filipino Star Ngayon, 169 of them were sensationalized because of exaggerated words used. Generally, out of five characteristics of sensationalism only one was identified, that is, the use of exaggerated words. After analyzing all the news headlines, the researchers concluded that the news headlines of Filipino Star Ngayon used mostly the boxed head type of headline. Filipino Star Ngayon adhere to the rules in writing headlines as presented by Pangilinan (1988). A majority of the news headlines in Filipino Star Ngayon were found sensationalized. These headlines were considered sensationalized because of the exxageration of words used. Therefore, Filipino Star Ngayon is considered a good newspaper.
