Abstract: BISCOCHO, MA. JOANA MEI L. & DADO, KARMELA CECILIA L. Comparative Analysis on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women Between the Republic of the Philippines and the Republic of Iceland. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in International Studies Major in European Studies. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2019. Adviser: Prof. Alberto M. Aguilar. The study was conducted to compare the gender gap profile and the public policies on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women in Economic Participation and Opportunity between the Republic of the Philippines and the Republic of Iceland from 2013 — 2017. Specifically, the Study aimed to (1) identify the general public policies of the Philippines and Iceland for the elimination of discrimination against women in Economic Participation and Opportunity; (2) identify the specific public policies of the Philippines and Iceland in terms of- (a.) Labor force participation, (b.) Wage equality for similar work, (c.) Estimated earned income, (d.) Legislators, senior officials and managers, and (e.) Professional and technical workers; (3) identify the gender gap profile of the Philippines and Iceland; and (4) determine the strengths and weaknesses of the Philippines and Iceland. This study was conducted from December 2018 to March 2019. Descriptive — comparative research method was used in this study. Purposive sampling was used to select the two countries. The Study used secondary data, and descriptive statistics was used to analyze some of the data gathered by the authors. The results showed that the elimination of discrimination against women is embedded in the constitutions of both the Philippines and Iceland. Both countries also provide for gender budgeting and gender mainstreaming in their public policies. This suggested that the Philippines and Iceland both give high importance to the elimination of discrimination against women_ in Economic Participation and Opportunity. Iceland has public policies for all of the indicators of elimination of discrimination against women in Economic Participation and Opportunity whereas the Philippines lacks a public policy for the Estimated Earned Income Indicator. Iceland performs better than the Philippines on gender equality in the over-all Economic Participation and Opportunity; although, the difference in their average performance is only small. Having a higher average ratio in the Labor Force Participation and the Estimated Earned Income indicator as well as having outperformed the Philippines in the Wage Equality for Similar Work indicator helped Iceland rank higher. Iceland has greater number of identified strengths than the Philippines on the elimination of discrimination against women in Economic Participation and Opportunity. Nevertheless, the Philippines and Iceland both have public policies that either country can learn from and consider adopting.
