Abstract: CUETO, AURELIO JR. A. and PERIDO, MA. JESUSA LEE D. Development of Microcontroller-based Beer Maker. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. July, 2017. Adviser: Engr. Mr. Andy A. Dizon. A study was conducted to design and develop a Microcontroller-based beer maker. The project aimed to help home-made beer makers, entrepreneurs and businesses as a whole to have an alternative way of beer making from manual operation to an automated system for the beer making industry. The general objective of the study was to design and develop a Microcontroller-based beer maker. The study specifically aimed to: design and construct the system; develop a program that will control the system; test and evaluate the machine’s performance according to: functionality of the system and device, accuracy of beer ingredients such as malt, hops and yeast dispensed by the hopper, accuracy of the water dispensed by the solenoid valve, accuracy of the juice dispensed by the dosing pump, and quality of the beer produced; conduct the cost computation of the system. The automated beer maker was designed and developed to execute three single loading options, and each loading can produce 2 L, 3 L, and 4 L of beer depending on the choice of the user. The amount of ingredients to be dispensed depends on the option selected by the user. The materials that were used in the study were: microcontroller unit, coil heater, temperature controllers, geared motors, motorized ball valves, load cell controllers, dosing pump, and photo-interrupter sensors. The beer maker is composed of five (5) major sections — the controller section, input section, mashing section, boiling section, and the fermentation section. The machine used an Arduino Mega 2560 controller unit to control the entire system such as the temperature needed during the mashing and boiling process and executes the program to control the relays, motors, and sensors at the same time. Also, power supply, relay drivers, circuit breakers, magnetic contactors, and solid state relay were used to supply and control the electrical power for the system. LCD for displaying options and notifications, and a piezo buzzer for giving alerts to the user. Result of the evaluation showed, based from the evaluated capacity and efficiency, that the automated beer maker was considered desirable and effective compared to manual process of beer making. Based on NCRDEC Home Management Technician’s evaluation, the beer output of the machine was proven acceptable in terms of physical attributes and beer quality. Based on the evaluation from CAFENR Institute of Food Science and Technology, the beer output has met the beer quality standards based from its beer composition and alcohol content. The study was proven effective on its capability to meet its objectives. The automated beer maker had a total cost of P 92, 820.00.
