Pagsubok: Lived Experiences of People Suffered from Hansen's Disease in Selected
Areas in Cavite. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang,
Cavite. May 2019. Thesis Adviser: Ms. Mayeyean T. Taguibalos, RPm.
This study specifically aimed to determine a) the lived experiences of people who
suffered from Hansen's Disease; and b) how do they gave meaning to their experiences.
The study utilized qualitative design incorporating interpretative phenomenological
research (IPR) design which intends to capture and describe the lived experiences of eight
(8) people who suffered from Hansen's Disease in selected areas in Cavite; considering that
the participants have a job or any form of income to support themselves and the family; at least
20 years old and above; residing in Cavite; regardless of the gender and must be willing to
participate in the conduct of the study. The researchers used phenomenological analysis as
data analysis and, a semi-structured interview guide reviewed by three (3)
psychometricians was used as an instrument.
The study consists of four (4) superordinate themes such as: physical changes, being
secretive, personal challenges that they need to overcome, and becoming a productive
member of a society.
Due to the difficulties they experienced, it is revealed that discrimination was not
prevalent in people who suffered from Hansen's disease because they became secretive
regarding their condition. Still, their personal challenges became a reason for them to be more
faithful to God Also, their state in life becomes their reason to be a productive member of a
society by generating an income for their family, showing care for other people and achieve a
meaningful and fulfilling life.
