Abstract: BAUTISTA, CARL MATHEW M., SALADAGA, PRISCILLA J. JOYS AND SORROWS OF ELDERLIES AND THE EMPATHIC RESPONSE OF SOCIAL WORKERS. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Social Work, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. May 2019. Adviser: Merlie C. Nahilat, RSW, MSSW. The study was conducted at Mama's Hope Haven of Norway Inc. in No. 25 Pag-asa St., Felix Manalo Road, Barangay Navarro, General Trias, Cavite and Kanlungan ni Maria, Antipolo from December 2018 to February 2019. It was conducted to determine the joys and sorrows of the elderly clients of Mama's Hope Haven of Norway and Kanlungan ni Maria and the empathic response of the social workers. Specifically, the study aimed to 1.) determine the joys experienced by the elderlies, 2.) determine the sorrows experienced by elderlies, 3.) find out the empathic responses of the social workers in the joys and sorrows of the elderlies and 4.) determine the effects of joys and sorrows of the elderlies to the behavior of the social workers. The research was a narrative study and the participants of the study were six (6) elderlies whose ages ranged from 65 to 95 years old. Four of these elderlies and one social worker from Mama's Hope Haven of Norway while two elderlies and one social worker were from Kanlungan ni Maria in Antipolo, Rizal. To understand more the life of the elderlies, an interview was conducted by the researchers. In the sharing of life of the elderlies, their broad experiences captured most of the unforgettable memories when they were young. Most of these were the unexpected situations such as overcoming the hardship of life, finding meaning in serving and caring for other people. On the other hand, there was inseparable experience of the elderlies who expressed their regrets in their life journey wanting to do more, striving to keep their control of a particular situation, and the desire to be reunited with their love ones. With their life experience despite the challenges, elderlies had constant faith as they overcome their life struggles. Likewise, social workers through their experiences went beyond their way to deal with their clients. They tried to find ways that could concretely help the elderlies as part of their empathic response in the joys and sorrows experienced by the elderlies. They spent time chatting, so that elderlies would feel that they were accepted and not alone. They also initiated activities to improve their services. Moreover, positive relationship was very relevant and helpful in the strengthening of the existing sense of being loved, cared, accepted, and valued. These were both important in the lives of the elderlies and of the social workers to create and grow in mutual living with meaningful existence.
