Abstract: MHAECEE JANE HERRERA and GLE-ANNE MARTINEZ. Challenges and Coping Strategies of Selected Senior Citizens of Calibuyo, Tanza, Cavite in Dealing with Home Quarantine and Social Isolation Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic. Undergraduate thesis. Bachelor of Science in Social Work. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2022. Adviser: Ma. Catherine Bacor. The objectives of the study were to determine (1) challenges faced by senior citizens during home quarantine and social isolation; and how these challenges affect them, (2) identify the coping mechanisms of the senior citizens during pandemic and (3) to find out the existing support for senior citizens during COVID-19 Pandemic. The researchers focused on the challenges, coping strategies and existing supports. The researchers started conducting the interviews from the month of February 2022 to March 2022, the researchers were able to provide a result for the study. The researchers conducted the interviews to selected Senior Citizens of Calibuyo, Tanza, Cavite. The participants of the study consisted of 8 senior citizens. A Qualitative Research design was utilized while the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to treat the gathered data from the face- to-face interview then came up with the conclusions of the study. Life for senior citizens during a pandemic was very challenging. On the other hand, it provided them with a wealth of life experience. They can no longer go out, move around, or work to support themselves and their families some include the financial difficulties they encounter as a result of losing their employment and livelihoods, others who rely solely on the assistance of relatives and villages to meet their needs during the pandemic. The diversion on social media, cellphones, television, and other uses of digital technology encouraged them to not relax their minds in the midst of the ongoing pandemic. Gardening or planting vegetables in their backyards also aided them, in order for them not to get bored and divert their attention to useful things and at the same time it makes them feel better. Despite the fact that senior citizens in Calibuyo face numerous challenges, the Local Government has failed to offer them assistance, yet they continue to hope for assistance from their barangay. But in the end, they learned that no matter what challenges and hardships they face, they will only be able to rely on themselves; they have learned to value health and, especially, life. The research provides more understanding about older adults and contributes to the field of gerontology and geriatric social work that focuses on assisting elderly and aging patients. This study utilized the Qualitative Research method using Phenomenological design. Keywords: challenges, coping strategies, home quarantine, social isolation, COVID-19, senior citizens.
