BAJARO, JANA MARIAE B., BULATAO, SHARON B., and MERCADO, CLARISSE T. Unraveling depression among individuals in a rehabilitation center in Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Nursing Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. December 2018. Adviser: Rolando P. Antonio RN, MANO, Psy.
This study was conducted to unravel depression of individuals in a rehabilitation center in Cavite, specifically to discuss the adolescence life experiences, intra-psychic conflicts, and reactions to life events encountered during depressive stage. This study was conducted in a rehabilitation center in Cavite. This institution was chosen by the researchers because of the criteria were met by the place, specifically having individuals aged 18 to 35, who have been clinically diagnosed with depression, and admitted in a rehabilitation center. It was identified using a purposive or judgmental sampling technique. Purposive or judgmental sampling was used. Wherein the researchers handpicked the subjects who are deemed that is typical to the population under the scope and criteria, this will represent each type of the desired characteristics to best serve the purpose of the study. This was utilized to meet the eligible criteria of the researchers. The researchers have chosen ten participants from the typical population, meeting the said criteria. The remarkable themes were met from the data gathered from the answers of five participants, meeting the saturation point of the study.
Guide questions were made and were checked by the experts in their field of specialization. This was used in the semi structured personal interview rendered for three visits. The questionnaire was divided into two major parts: the first part states the socio-demographical data and the pertinent information of the participant; and the second part is the general lead guide questions for participants to unravel their depressive experiences.
Through analysis of data, there were four themes discovered: in terms of adolescence life experiences, social influence, weak family relationship, and broken relationship were identified; in terms of intra-psychic conflict, there is negative self-concept; and lastly, the reactions to life events were identified as unhealthy coping strategies. The data gathered showed that the participants have similar patterns of experiences and behaviors towards depression. It was ascertained that, the participants (n=5) had experienced social influence, separation of parents, and unsuccessful relationship with others. They also share the same perception about themselves in terms of being helpless, having loss of self-control, and being too dependent to others. Moreover, their reactions to life events were mainly focused in unhealthy coping strategies where they engaged in substance abuse, self-harm, and social isolation.
The result showed that all the themes identified greatly affect the experiences of depressed individuals. Primarily, their experiences contribute a greater part to their psychological perspective. Participant's emotional status was unraveled from their outside experiences to their current situation which revealed that depression in men can be hidden by substance abuse and other externalizing problems. Therefore, masculine depression assumes that gender norms affect the presentation of depression and how different men respond to negative affect in general.
