Abstract: DEMETILLO, CHARISE MONTES, “An Item Analysis of College Algebra Departmentalized Examination Administered During the Second Semester of SY 2007-2008 at Cavite State University”. A special problem. Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics with specialization in Statistics, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. Adviser: Analyn A. Mojica. The study was conducted to determine the test’s discrimination and difficulty indeces and the effectiveness of its options. The difficulty index served as indicator of how easy or difficult the item was while the discrimination index distinguished between the knowledgeable and less knowledgeable examinees. The source of data was a 50-item multiple choice midterm examination in College Algebra administered to 233 BSHRM, BSTRM and DHRM students and the corresponding answer sheets. Based on the responses of the BSHRM students, the test has an average difficulty index of 0.52 or 52 % while those of the DHRM students resulted to an average difficulty level of 0.41 or 41 %. Based on the responses of BSTRM students, the test has an average difficulty index of 0.43 or 43 %. An over-all difficulty index of 0.45 or 45% indicated that the departmentalized midterm exam in College Algebra had an average level of difficulty. For the BSHRM and DHRM, the test was considered to have a moderate discrimination indeces of 0.32 or 32 % and 0.38 or 38% respectively while for the BSTRM, there was a higher discrimination index of 0.47 or 47%. The departmenta- lized test had a mean discrimination index of 0.39 or 39 % which indicated that the test could moderately discriminate between the knowledgeable and the less knowledgeable examinees. Further analysis of the test items revealed that there were 41 test items whose options were not effective distractors, thus, these items need to be revised. The Kuder-Richardson' Formula 20 was used to measure the reliability coefficient of the examination. A very high reliability coefficient of 0.8568 implied that the test items were significantly related to each other.
