Abstract: Costelo, Ma. Cristina C. and Natanauan, Lorena R. “Classification of Cigarette Smokers Using Cluster and Discriminant Analyses”. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 2004. Adviser: Ms. Anna Marie A. Ardina. This study was conducted to classify groups of male cigarette smokers of Cavite State University using Cluster Analysis and to develop a Fisher’s Linear Discriminant Function for classifying the given cigarette smokers’. Age (X;), curriculum year (X32), allowance per day (X3), price of cigarette per stick (X4), number of sticks consumed per day (Xs), and starting age in smoking (X.) were used as the discriminating variables. Three groups of smokers were obtained using cluster analysis namely: light, medium and heavy. The derived Fisher’s linear discriminant functions for the three groups were: hy: -20.475 + .578X2 + .276X3 + .208X4 - 3.18E-02X5: ho: -8.238 + 1.662X2 + .114K3 +.107X4 +.239X5 hz: -14.749 + 1.226X%2 + .210X3 + .112X4 + .220X5 The discriminating variables that contributed most to the classification of cigarette smokers were: curriculum year (Xz), allowance per day (X3), price of cigarette per stick (X4), and number of stick consumed per day (Xs). About 80% of the original group cases were correctly classified using the model, while 20% were misclassified.

Costelo, Ma. Cristina C. and Natanauan, Lorena R.

The derived Fisher’s linear discriminant functions for the three groups were:
hy: -20.475 + .578X2 + .276X3 + .208X4 - 3.18E-02X5:
ho: -8.238 + 1.662X2 + .114K3 +.107X4 +.239X5
hz: -14.749 + 1.226X%2 + .210X3 + .112X4 + .220X5

The discriminating variables that contributed most to the classification of cigarette smokers were: curriculum year (Xz), allowance per day (X3), price of cigarette per stick (X4), and number of stick consumed per day (Xs).

About 80% of the original group cases were correctly classified using the model, while 20% were misclassified.
