A farm practice on Intercropping Gabi with Squash was conducted from May to December 1991 in a 1,500 sq.m. area at Kayquit, Indang, Cavite. The project aimed to gain necessary skills in crop production and improve farm income through adoption of intercropping gabi with squash.
The data gathered in the project were analyzed to determine the economics of intercropping gabi with other cash crops like squash. Result of analysis was made on a per hectare basis, indicating the cost and return and comparing it to previous study on monocropping of gabi as an alternative practice and ready reference for the end users (farmers).
The project indicated a decrease of about 30% in the yield of gabi, compared with one produced as a monocrop. It showed, however, that the net income could be doubled when gabi is intercropped with squash, giving a very high return of investment, 121%. This was due evidently to the income derived from squash.
Aside from the proper cultural practices employed, accessibility, planting calendar, favorable climate and weather condition are some of the factors that could be considered in attaining high yields.
