AUSTRAL, ARLENE ATAS. March 2000 "Isolation and Characterization of Streptomyces species with Antifungal Activity”. Bachelor of Science in Biology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. Adviser: Dr. Yolanda A. Ilagan
The study was conducted mainly to isolate, characterize and identify the antifungal antibiotic-producing Streptomyces. Fifty-five isolates of Streptomyces were obtained from Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Benguet, Baguio, Palawan and Quezon. Twenty-one of these isolates were positive for antifungal activity. Aspergillus niger was the most inhibited test organism. The Streptomyces isolates were grown on six different media. These isolates were found to be fast growers on Yeast Malt Agar and Bennet's Agar. Some isolates were able to produce a soluble pigment on Bennet's Agar, Yeast Malt Agar, Galactose Ttryptone Agar, Casein Starch Agar and Czapeck Sucrose Agar. The isolates were identified as Streptomyces kanamyceticus (3), S. tanashiensis (2), S.luteogriseus (2), S. crystallinus (2), S. finlayi, S. roseogriseus, S. spadicus, S. hirsutus, S. antimycoticus, S. aureofaciens, S. lusitanus and S. griseoalbus. Six isolates were unidentified.
