Abstract: LITA MELISSA LYN C. "Stress-Coping Style of Selected Varsity and Non-varsity Players of Cavite State University. UndergraduateThesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology April 2007. Adviser: Ms. Joy G. Novero This study attempted to determine if there is significant difference in stress-coping style of varsity and non-varsity players of Cavite State University in terms of problem-focused, emotion-focused and avoidance-focused coping style. Specifically, this study sought to determine the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender and year level; which stress-coping style is commonly practiced by the respondents; and if there is significant relationship between demographic profile and stress-coping style of the varsity and non- varsity players of Cavite State University. This study was conducted from November to January 2007 at Cavite State University which focused mainly on demographic profile and stress-coping style of varsity and non-varsity players. This study employed the descriptive design which is which is integrated by a normative survey-method- using questionnaire as gathering tool. It was indicated the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender and year level. It shows that in terms of age, high percentage of the varsities belong to age 18-19 years of age, while to non-varsities many belongs to ages 16-17. Meanwhile, in terms of gender of the varsities it shows that male are dominant with female at 44 or 62.9 percent. Likewise, in terms of non-varsities there is a high percentage of female than male at 56 or 70 percent. However, in line with year level it indicates that most of the varsities were in third year level at frequency of 22 or 31.4 percent. On the other hand, it reveals that most of the non-varsities were freshmen at 27 or 33.8 percent. Study reveals that demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender and year level has no significant relation with respondents coping style. Furthermore, in relation to coping-style it is concluded that in terms of problem-focused varsities were using this kind of coping with stress more than non-varsities. Meanwhile, in terms of emotion-focused coping, it shows that non-varsities were using this kind of coping style more frequently than varsities. It shows that during stressful situation, non-varsity used positive self-talk or relaxation. Emotion-focused coping style was viewed as a maladaptive style of coping with stress. However, in terms of avoidance-focused coping style it reveals that varsity was using more frequently this coping style when they are being stressed. It means that varsities are engaging in another task and turned away from stressor to eliminate stress. Thus, significant difference between stress-coping styles was found in selected varsity and non-varsity players of Cavite State University.
