Abstract: AYON, GRACHEL M., CATIMBANG, GEMMA LYN L., PERESI.A, JENALYN V. Lifestyles of Hypertensive Men in Mendez, Cavite. B.S. Special Problem. Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2007. Adviser. Mrs. Vina V. Velasco and Dr. Josefina R. Rint. The study was conducted to identify the factors that lead to hypertension, identify the factor that has the highest percentage in contributing to hypertension, determine the percentage rate or distribution of hypertension affecting males of Mendez and enumerate steps residents can do to prevent complications. The study was conducted in the town of Mendez, Cavite. A total of 50 selected males of Mendez, Cavite whose ages range from 35-60 years old were the respondents. Data were collected through personal interview with the aid of the questionnaire. Results revealed that as people become older, their blood pressure usually rises. Respondents, who have normal BMI, are still prone to hypertension. Men with ages that ranged from 55-60 and had no work had the highest risk of having hypertension. The foods especially with salt cause an elevation in blood volume. Drinking coffee also increases excretion of calcium, which also may affect the blood pressure. Walking was the highest percentage of exercises that shows this was the only regular exercise they performed in one day. Hypertensive males do not conduct exercises through aerobics and dancing. The common lifestyles identified among men in Mendez, Cavite ages 35-60 are food preference such as salty foods, fatty foods, steamed vegetable, stewed vegetable, sautéed vegetable and processed food; beverages such as soft drinks, coffee, beer, wine, gin, fresh juice; smoking cigarette; exercises such as jogging, walking, heavy lifting, dancing, cleaning, aerobics, heavy gardening; eating habits; working hours. It was identified that food preference is the leading lifestyle that increases blood pressure among men in Mendez. There is no correlation between age and body mass index. The factors that are still affecting the hypertensive men are drinking alcohol and stewed vegetables. They limit dancing and aerobics exercise to avoid excess fatigue.
