BURGOS, DEREK REO OROZCO. "EFFECT S OF VITAMIN A, D, E INJECTION AND VITAMIN-MINERAL PREMIX SUPPLEMENTATION ON SEMEN VOLUME AND SPERM MOTILITY OF SENIOR BOARS". Undergraduate Thesis. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. May 2009. Adviser: Jaylord G. Tanora, DVM.
The study was conducted to determine the effects of injectable vitamin A, D, E and vitamin-mineral premix on the semen quality of senior boars based on the following parameters: semen volume, sperm motility and cost benefit analysis. Twelve boars were randomly distributed to the three groups: control- fed with 2 kilograms plain commercial feeds; treatment 1-injected with 5m1 vitamin A, D, E intramuscularly once a month for three months and treatment 2-fed with rations supplemented with vitamin-mineral premix (50g/2 kg feed) given daily for seven consecutive days within a one month for three months. Semen volume of boars are within normal range (200-300 ml) but was fluctuating in all treatments and the trend on the effect of treatment was not established.
Difference between treatments and within treatments through time was found to be not statistically significant. Semen motility in Treatment 2 (80%) was consistently higher compared to Treatment 1 (76.28%) and the Control group (70%) on the first three months but decreased in July and August. However, the difference was statistically not significant. Cost effectiveness analysis revealed that Control group (Php 79,750.80) had the higher profit compared to other treatment groups (Php 61,675.80 and Php 75, 250.80 for Treatments I and 2, respectively). This study demonstrated that giving vitamin ADE or vitamin-mineral premix to senior boars does not have a significant effect on semen volume or sperm motility and may increase production cost in a breeder operation
