Abstract: NATE, JOHLI G., Production System and Physical Distribution Practices of Brewed For You Coffee Shop. A Case Study. Bachelor of Science in Business Management major in Operations Management. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. October 2014. Adviser: Engr. Gilberto S. David. This case study was conducted at Brewed for You Coffee Shop, located at Km 53 Aguinaldo Highway, Brgy. Buho, Silang, Cavite. The study aimed to analyze the production system and physical distribution practices of Brewed For You Coffee Shop; to identify the quality standards and measures being followed in the coffee production and physical distribution aspects; to assess the performance of the firm relevant to study by SWOT analysis; and finally to identify the problems relevant to production system and physical distribution practices being experienced by the firm and recommend feasible solutions to problems identified. Both primary data and secondary data were used to obtain relevant information for the study. Descriptive method was used as technique of analysis. Furthermore, diagrams, figures and tables were utilized to properly present processes, components and strategies. SWOT Analysis was also used to evaluate the performance of the company in its production system and physical distribution aspects. Brewed for You Coffee Shop was an exclusive family business limited only to the immediate members of Mr. Alvin R. Dimapilis since 1954. Gold Blend, Four Blend, Espresso, Pure Baraco, Robusta, Excelsa, Arabica and Alamid coffee were its major coffee products being sold to local and foreign customers, other coffee shops, restaurants, offices and other institutional accounts. To make these products, local farmers from Amadeo, Mendez, and Silang, Cavite deliver raw materials to the firm. The company also source Arabica coffee variety from Mt. Province and Gourmet Farms, Inc. Sun drying, milling and blowing, second drying, moisture testing, weighing and bagging, transportation, roasting, grinding, weighing and packaging make up the detailed production flow of coffee processing. The firm has no target volume of production and was only dependent upon how much suppliers can provide. Scheduling of milling operations for green beans depends only on the seasonality and availability of coffee. Furthermore, through personal contact, produced goods were delivered mostly to customers within Cavite and Metro Manila areas. Moreover, First-in First-out (FIFO) method, 5:1 Rule, maintaining daily updates and records, proper stocking and following standard holding time of inventories were done to ensure proper materials handling, warehousing and inventory control. Proper quality measures such as maintaining proper hygiene, safety and training on handling machines, ensuring dryness of coffee beans, degree of roasting, consistency of grinding, control of shelf life, proper loading of products and choosing good condition of the transportation mode, and proper stitching and sealing of jute bags were followed by the firm to meet and be consistent with the quality products being produced. Moreover, shortage on supplies during procurement, noncompliance of the workers to the standard procedures set by the firm, delay on distribution of products to customers, poor storage practices and lack of proper documentation for monitoring volume of production and inventory of green beans were common problems encountered by Brewed for You management.
