Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2019. Adviser: Engr. Gilberto S. David. The study was primarily conducted to determine the occupational hazards and risk management practices in selected poultry farms in Cavite. Specifically, it aimed to determine: (a) the socio-demographic profile of the farmers of selected poultry farms; (b) the business profile of selected poultry farms; (c) the occupational hazards and risks encountered by the farmers; (d) the severity level of occupational hazards and risks; (e) the current practices being implemented in selected poultry farms; and (f) the significant relationship behveen the management practices and the business profile. The study was conducted in six towns in Cavite, namely: Indang, Maragondon, Maga"anes, General Emilio Aguina'do (Bailen), Dasmarifias City, and Trece Martires City from January to June 2019. There were 125 participants involved in this study. The socio-economic characteristics of the participants such as age, sex, civil status, level of education, and the number of years of farming experience, and their business profile such as number of years in business, capacity of the farm, and current population of birds were all described through the use of frequency counts and percentage while the level of severity of risks and occupational hazards and the level of implementation of risk management practices and personnel health and safety practices were analyzed through the use of a five-point Likert scale, mean, and standard deviation. The findings revealed that majority of the participants belong to the age group of 15 to 26 years old (40%). The study further revealed that these participants are male (92%); married (51.2%); finished secondary education (49.6%); worked as flockmen and same positions (68%); and had farming experiences ranging from five years and below (66.4%). Moreover, the findings also showed that majority of the farms involved in the study were operational for 6 to 11 years (41.03%). They had less than 24,199 population of (74.36%); and a Size ranging from I to 1.99 hectares (46.15%). These came from the municipality of Magallanes (30.8%). Majority of these Poultry' raisers were into broiler production (84.6%). Additionally, the given risk situations were at low severity level while occupational hazards were rarely happening. These denote that they were occurring but did not pose as a major threat to the overall operation of the farms. These further suggest that the participants were risk averse. This means that they are cautious on the possible risks and hazards and prepare countermeasures to lessen the negative effect of the risk situations and occupational hazards. Results also revealed that risk management practices were found to be always implemented while personnel health and safety practices were often implemented and maintained. These denote positive result since these indicate that owners of selected poultry farms in Cavite were considering the safety and health of their chickens as well as their workers and adequately protecting them from poultry related hazards that might bring negative effects on the overall operation of the farms. Furthermore, a moderately positive relationship was found between the risk management practices and bird population. However, the risk management practices had no significant relationship with the business profile considering the years of operation and farm size. Also, there was a moderately positive correlation between the personnel health and safety practices and business profile considering the farm size and bird population. As found, the number of years of operation had no significant relationship with the personnel health and safety practices. With these findings, it can be concluded that selected poultry farms in Cavite are conforming well to the risk management and personnel health and safety practices which indicate the participants' awareness towards the risks and hazards in their farms. Further study covering all poultry farms in Cavite could be conducted to come up with more comprehensive results. In addition, factors such as educational attainment and number of years of farming experience of the workers may be used by future researchers to determine whether they have a relationship with the implementation of risk management and personnel health and safety practices. Lastly, future researchers who would like to conduct similar studies may only focus on a specific type of poultry - layer, broiler, and breeder.
