Internal combustion engines running on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas are well-proven technologies and work much like gasoline-powered spark- ignition engine. They normally used spark ignition engines for bi-fueled (gasoline/CH4) cars, but have also been used, for example, in compression ignition (i.e. diesel type) engines for heavy duty vehicles. The steering system allows the driver to control the direction of the vehicle travel. This is made possible by linkage that connects the steering wheel to the steerable wheels and tires. Power steering uses a hydraulic pump or electric motor to assists the driver's effort. Most vehicles have a power to make parking easier. The suspension system is located between the wheel axles and the vehicle body or frame. Its purpose is to support the weight of the vehicle, cushion bumps and holes in the road, maintain traction between the tires and the road and hold the wheel alignment. The suspension system allows the vehicle to travel over rough surfaces with a minimum of up-and-down body movement. It allows the vehicle to corner with minimum roll of tendency to loose traction between tires and road surfaces. The main focus of the design project is to improve the steering system and leaf spring suspension system of an owner-type jeep barangay patrol. The aim of the design project is to produce a cheaper, clean and safer fuel that petrol or diesel fuel for the owner type jeep vehicle. The suspension system and steering system were the parts improved to ensure its safety and smooth drivability. The study provided steering system and leaf spring suspension system functionality because the driver seems to have a hard time in maneuvering the owner-type jeep and also the steering is very hard to control. The engine of the existing barangay patrol was considered for general overhauling. The piston rings were worn out and the engine itself has a low output torque. The carburetor was experiencing wild idle due to some worn out parts inside the carburetor. So the engine was fully reconditioned and overhauled to secure the performance of the owner type jeep is good and normal before the installation of LPG system. The owner type jeep vehicle has a hard steering system that is considered not good for maneuvering. The users of the barangay patrol were not satisfied on the performance of the maneuvering system. The old steering system was replaced with a rack-end pinion type with an electronic motor installed in the distributor. The part of the suspension system that was improved and developed was all the shock absorbers were replaced; all wheel bearings and front knuckle bearings were repacked. The wheel cylinder of both rear brake systems was also replaced. All of the components mentioned were technically replaced due to some errors experienced while driving the vehicle. Before the LPG components were installed, the ignition system was first checked and reconditioned. The existing distributor system was re-installed with an electronic type distributor and carburetor assembly was also replaced with a new one. This is necessary for the equal timing of the air and fuel mixture that will flow inside the system. The LPG was supplied with a toroidal tank filled to ensure supply of liquefied petroleum gas in the engine system. The LPG system was observed and clearly tested effective in the performance of the engine The actual performance of the owner type jeep indicates that the improved scope of the automotive works to be done was effective. After such improvement of the steering and suspension system, the users find the vehicle user-friendly because of the improved riding comfort of the passengers of the vehicle. While the advanced technology installed was the auto LPG fuel system that will help in saving the ozone layer was truly met. After the installation of LPG components, the engine idling with petrol showed normal good idle and vehicle performance was improved. The installed LPG components were properly placed in the vehicle with the consideration of safety for users. The system includes a bi-fuel switch that will ensure the user to choose on petrol and LPG fuel. Based on the results of the criteria evaluated by 15 barangay officials and 5 automotive instructors, the overall grand mean of the evaluation which was reviewed and criticized by 20 members of Department of Industrial Engineering and Technology faculty and barangay officials of the Barangay Alulod, Indang, Cavite. The grandmean of the evaluation was 4.59 which means that the improvement of owner type jeep vehicle is presentable and useful for the constituents of Barangay Alulod, Indang, Cavite. As determined by the results, the authors recommend to replace the wheels and mags of the owner type jeep vehicle, installation of handbrake and installation of panel gauge engine system.
