RODRIN, ROWENA, Applied Research IV (Agricultural Science Curriculum), Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite, March, 19910 GROWTH AND YIELD RESPONSE OF YAM (Dioscorea alata) AS AFFECTED BY DIFFERENT CONTAINER MEDIA AND MULCHING MATERIALS.
Adviser: Mr. Carlos No Rodil
The study was conducted at Kayquit, Indang, Cavite
from May 1990 to February 1991 in order to determine which of the container media and mulching materials will give the best results on the growth and yield performance of yam.
The different treatments were arranged following the Split—plot design with three replications. The treatments were the following:
Main plot: Container media :Container Media
C1- fertilizer sack
C2- polyethylene bag
C3- cooking oil can
C4- control
Subplot:
M1- rice straw
M2- coconut husk
M3- gravel
M4- no mulch
The results of the study are summarized as following:
1.Yams not planted on containers were significantly better than those which were planted in the container, so Yams planted in the ground solid were not significantly different from those planted in cooking oil cans.20 Among the mulching materials used, coconut husk effected favorably the growth and yield performance of yams 30 Root constriction and inability to absorb more nutrients and water were evident in yams planted in containers.
Ml
rice straw
M2 ooconut husk M3gravel
M4 no mulch
The results of the study are summarized as f0110wg:
Yams not planted on containers were significantly
better than those which were planted in the container, so Yams planted in the ground solid were not significantly different from those planted in cooking oil cans.
