Abstract: CALAPATI, MAEA MAFFIE O., DE CASTRO, EPHRAIM JOHN A., VALENCIA, ALEJA MARIE M., Effect of Water Leaf Plant (Talinum triangulare) Salad Among Individuals with Anemia. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology with SP CON MT no. 2015-04. Cavite State University. Indang, Cavite. 2015. Adviser: Dr. Adelaida E. Sangalang. This study entitled “Effect of Water Leaf Plant (Talinum triangulare) Salad Among Individuals with Anemia” was conducted at International Institute of Rural Reconstruction and Silang Medical Laboratory, Silang, Cavite. It aimed to determine the effect of Water Leaf Plant (Talinum triangulare) Salad among individuals with anemia. Specifically, it aimed to: determine which among the salad made from fresh raw leaves of Water Leaf Plant (Talinum triangulare) and salad made from blanched leaves of Water Leaf Plant (Jalinum triangulare) is more effective in increasing blood parameter values; determine the number of days that Water Leaf Plant (Talinum triangulare) Salad made from raw leaves and blanched leaves had any score of difference as basis to state that it already took effect in the blood parameter values; determine which among the blood parameters that Water Leaf Plant (Talinum triangulare) Salad had its utmost effect; and determine the type of anemia in which Water Leaf Plant (talinum triangulare) Salad had its effect through the help of the laboratory tests. Nine female participants with anemia within the reproductive age were subjected in the experiment. All of the test subjects were tested for Complete Blood Count before the administration of treatments for the baseline data to be gathered. Treatment 0 served as the control group without the administration of Water Leaf Plant (Talinum triangulare) Salad. Respondents under the raw water leaf salad group were administered with fresh raw Water Leaf Plant (7alinum triangulare) Salad, and respondents under blanched water leaf salad group were given fresh blanched Water Leaf Plant (7alinum triangulare) Salad for three weeks. Blood parameters such as RBC Count, Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, Mean Cell Volume (MCV), Mean Cell Hemoglobin (MCH), and Mean Cell Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) were monitored every seven days for three weeks. Blood parameter values were analyzed using PCCD Automated Analyzer. Based on the results obtained, it is proven that the raw Water Leaf Plant Salad is more effective in increasing blood parameters such as Red Blood Cell (RBC), Hematocrit (Hct), Mean Cell Volume (MCV) and Mean Cell Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) rather than blanched Water Leaf Plant Salad. On the contrary, blanched Water Leaf Plant Salad is more effective in increasing Hemoglobin (Hgb) and Mean Cell Hemoglobin (MCH) quite than raw Water Leaf Plant Salad. Considering that Water Leaf Plant (Talinum triangulare) has the ability to increase Hemoglobin and Hematocrit values (one of the indications of anemia) and can be easily obtained at home, it can also be used as an alternative for chemically-based medicines in treating anemia.
