This study was conducted to identify the predictors of mathematics performance of the secondary students of Cavite College of Fisheries.
Specifically, the research aimed to determine: a) the characteristics of teacher in terms of educational attainment, length of teaching experience, attitude towards mathematics, performance level in mathematics, and job satisfaction b) the characteristics of the student in terms of sibling order, study habits, attitude towards mathematics and their high school academic performance in Filipino , English, Science & Technology, c) the socioeconomic status of parent respondents, d) the academic performance of the students in mathematics, e) the relationship between teachers’ characteristics and mathematics performance of the students; students’ characteristics and their mathematics performance; and parents socioeconomic status and mathematics performance of the students, and f) predictors of mathematics performance of high school students of Cavite College of Fisheries.
The instruments used in data gathering were Personal Data Sheet Questionnaire for Teachers Evaluation, Job Descriptive Index Scale, Study Habit Checklist, Mathematics Inventory Test and Socioeconomic Questionnaire.
The study was conducted at Cavite College of Fisheries, Bucana, Naic, Cavite.
The respondents included 241 students with their respective parents and three secondary mathematics teachers. The statistical measures employed were mean, frequency counts, percentage, standard deviation, multiple correlation and multiple regression analysis.
Teacher respondents were all BSE graduates with units in Masters. Most of them were teaching from 21 to 25 years. In terms of teaching performance, students rated their teachers very satisfactory in the following areas, namely: students’ commitment, knowledge of the subject matter, teaching for independent learning and management of learning.
They all had a positive attitude toward mathematics but they were all uncertain with regards to their job satisfaction.
